The Unknown & Unknowable!
Wood Mosaic/ Sculpture, 26 X 26 Inches, 2022 Sureel Kumar

Whenever I look around me or at myself, I see a lot of physical, mental, religious and technological development has happened. As human beings, we think that we know a lot about the Existence and its workings. But when for the first time in Jaisalmere, Rajasthan, India, I looked at the arm of our own galaxy, I felt overwhelmed. I was able to look at just a fraction of billions of stars in the milky way galaxy. And cosmologists tell us that there are billions of galaxies with billions of stars in the vast expense of space. Another strange fact that the universe is expanding, All the galaxies are moving away from each other with multiple times the speed of light! Same is the situation at the micro level with atomic particles. They behave even more mysteriously. And if I look inside me, I feel unending space and unending processes of my thoughts and emotions.

So, how much I know about my own self? Very, very, very little. And whatever I know, it also seems like an illusion. A bigger part of me is unknown but another much bigger part seems unknowable. To me, a little part of the universe seems unknown, that means it can be known in the future. But most of the universe seems to be unknowable!
In this artwork I tried to express these feeling of mine. The colored mosaic is the unknown part and the rest is the unknowable!
